Echocardiography

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan that shows the heart's chambers, valves and how it is pumping.

Patients whose clinician wants a closer look at the heart, for example because of a murmur, breathlessness, chest discomfort or a heart condition being monitored.

The clinic team carries out the scan and makes sure the images and report go to the clinician who requested them, so the findings can be explained to you.

The scan is painless and usually takes a short time. You normally lie still while a probe is moved over your chest. Ask the clinic whether you need to prepare in any way.
